Soundgas Type 636P2 twin channel improved vintage mic preamp for sale. Designed and built in Derbyshire, England.

Twin channel rackmount evolution of our legendary 636P mic preamp circuit with Carnhill output transformer balanced outputs for greater versatility and extended sonic palette.

This tone monster is the ultimate incarnation of our celebrated Soundgas Type 636 which is an evolution of the legendary Grampian Type 636 Spring Reverb.

The 636P2 is a twin channel Carnhill transformer balanced germanium mic preamp used for recording and mix processing; it can also be used for guitar, synth, bass etc (via the front panel inputs/outputs) exactly the same way as two Soundgas Type 636P guitar preamp pedals with the added tonal option of transformer balanced output via the rear connections.

This circuit is also available in the 500 series format as the Soundgas Type 636P-500. The main difference being that we could not squeeze the big red Carnhill transformers into the 500 - they are sonically very close (if you want to use it for guitar etc like the 636P it's identical).

The Soundgas Type 636P2 is the latest incarnation of the Soundgas Type 636 and desktop Type 636P which both feature our evolution of same hairy mic preamp circuit as the original. However this is far more than two 636Ps in a rack: the addition of the Carnhill transformer balanced output option massively increases versatility and offers a wider sonic palette. From subtle sweetening and widening of audio signals passing through with very little gain applied through to maximum filth and gnarl via the original unbalanced input/outputs. The 636P2 brings this preamp into contention for more subtle bus/mix sweetening as well as wilder germanium fuzz and drive.

We are hand building a few limited runs to this specification.

How does it sound? At higher gain settings the transformers smooth out some of the wildness of the 636P to deliver a classy - yet still harmonically rich - sound. We have been blown away by how different these sound with the balanced outputs, and by how much we want to use it on everything. And if you want the full original 636P preamp magic, untamed by those beautiful red transformers? Simple - just plug into the 1/4" jack 'punch out' socket - this bypasses the transformer circuit and gives you that hairy (out of phase) direct output as found on the 636P.

What is it? Based on the original vintage units - famously used and abused by Lee 'Scratch' Perry and Pete Townshend - and many others since. This circuit builds on the spirit of the original vintage units - no tone sapping surface mount components in the audio path or DSP. Designed and built by our team in our new premises in Derbyshire, England.

Game changer
Like a pultec eqp1a this is a real game changer unit like you wanna run every tracks into it. The sound become way much warmer and present so easily. You can push hard into it and still super musical and pleasant.

An Interesting Flavor
Very interesting preamp - lots of grit of course. Sounds great on guitar as you would expect, but so far I like it most on chorus vocals to get some extra focus and energy.

I tried it on bass, (Low Impedance Break in/out > DI>Padded 5116-B), but I found the curve from clean(ish) to break up to be a little too fast so that the peaks were quite distorted while the body of the notes were not, even at around 10 o'clock with a passive bass. Hind sight, could be that it was hitting the subsequent preamp too hard. This thing adds a LOT of giddyup to the signal. Interested to try it the other way (Bass DI>636-P), but haven't gotten around to it yet.

One of my favorite parts of owning a piece like this is the pleasant surprises you get through experimentation. Sometimes you'll crank out an entire track without even noticing it.

Fantastic Preamp from character to grit
I was exdcited when these were released for the 500 series rack, and got even more excited when I started using it. Great for Black Ark-like flavours, giving grit and dimension to electronic instruments, or as a deep and stromg Bass DI.
The signalflow and I/O also makes it easy to use it as a preamp in fromt of a guitar amp. It sounds special as a mic pre on drums and guitars and vocals.

I love having character gear in the rack, to use for very specific sounds or to use for those special occassions. This is all that, but somehow an all around flexible tool at the same time, that will see constant use in all kinds of sessions.
