Product Description
NOTE: These are ready to ship and currently set up for 120v US voltage. If the buyer requires 220/240v this will add 10-15 days to the lead time (to allow for re-testing).
To select and set up two RE-201s that will run well together for stereo use requires exponentially more time than simply servicing two machines. We need a selection of prepared unsold echoes to choose from to begin with (which does not often happen). The variations in components and age over many years' (and four factories) production makes for a surprisingly wide range of performance between machines that all carry the RE-201 name.
So this is not something you will see from us very often: Will has excelled himself here and the machines have of course passed the golden ears testing of Joel. A pair of 201s, used in stereo is a truly wonderful thing. If you run them on effects sends from the desk and return them on channels hard-panned left and right, carefully feeding a little of one back into the other, you will enjoy the most glorious ping pong tape delay effect: once experienced, never forgotten - you'll be spoiled for years!
Dr Huw would not forgive us if we call these a stereo pair. Because of the variations in age and production of 201s, a true matched stereo pair is practically impossible. However, with a good deal of extra time and care (and a range machines to choose from), we've selected two machines that work very well together. The small differences in performance actually make the stereo effect more pleasing.
These echoes have been given our “standard” full overhaul which, in addition to the basic service, recapping and set up, includes:
Every machine is also tested by a musician (test equipment: their ears!) before shipping. Every one supplied with 12 months warranty and ongoing service support.
Note that we may have machines in a range of conditions (and prices) coming through – check our other listings or get in touch if this unit here isn’t the right one for you.
REPLACEMENT TAPES: Fitting any tapes other than those from us or Echo Fix will invalidate the warranty on our machines. We have sourced unused and dry-stored tape stock which is as close to original RT-1L tape formulation as possible (without conclusive confirmation from Roland themselves we cannot describe it as being an exact match) for their original RT-1L replacement loops and limited stocks of our replacement loops are available now. We’ve written a bit about our journeys in tape, which replacement loops to use in your Roland echo, not to mention the misinformation and poor quality tapes that seem to fill the internet. We may also have a very limited supply of sealed original NOS RT1-L tapes – see our store or get in touch.
There are currently no operational issues with this machine, but please be aware that these units require looking after and that regular use and maintenance are key to keeping this in good working order.

These echoes have been given our “standard” full overhaul which, in addition to the basic service, recapping and set up, includes:
- One of our new tapes
- One of our reconditioned rubber pinch rollers (more info to come about these, but essentially it's an original pinch roller with a new bearing and new rubber, NOT silicone - time consuming to produce, but only the best will give the best long term performance)
- Heads re-lapped to bring performance to better-than Roland factory spec - they are now more even and run at lower head gain (so you have the maximum amount of headroom available)
- Rebuilt motor
