One of the finest-sounding Hawk spring reverbs we've had - the HR-45 is a firm favourite here and has found its way onto some exceptional recordings in recent years. A distinctive stereo spring reverb with character, flexibility and rich overdriven tone that can end up in full on fuzz territory when overdriven hard, the HR-45 stands out from the pack.
Built in Japan in the 1970s, the HR-45 shares the same hifi-era styling as Hawk’s HE-2150 and HE-2250 tape echoes. It's a stereo unit with front and rear 1/4" jack inputs, RCA connections, and independent mic/line input control. The four-mode selector switch offers Normal, Reverse (inverts the wet signal channel), Split and Mono reverb operation.
Where this unit really shines is in how it reacts to being overdriven. Plugging a guitar directly into the mic input delivers anything from warm saturation to full-blown fuzzed-out reverb chaos - think Big Muff at the extremes. Equally usable on synths, drum machines, vocals, stems, etc. A standout spring reverb for sound design, dub processing or adding vintage character to any source.
A great alternative to the Pioneer SR-202W - more refined in many ways, but with its own distinct sonic palette. We’ve had many, many springs in the studio and this remains one of the most inspiring and flexible.
