Information from the seller:
An omni version of the Altec 175 System, the alternate capsule makes this version of the microphone more suitable for room micing and ambient micing on single sources.
Though originally intended as a lapel microphone for talk television broadcasting, these microphones sound uniquely bad on the human voice. Favoured by many engineers for acoustic sources, these vintage valve/tube microphones excel where detail and clarity are needed. An Albini go-to on snare drum due to their small profile and relatively low output. From the electrical audio site:
"Excellent snare drum mic. Also good for close mic on acoustic string instruments like banjo, guitar, mandolin. Can take very high signal level. Some system noise may make it unsuitable for very quiet recordings."
This particular model features the larger output transformer which tends to be an important note to some collectors, though we personally cannot tell the difference. (Please see photos)
This unit was serviced by Thump including a full recap, a modernized silicon DC heater, new power, and output cables.
