John Paul Jones Studio Collection: Timed Auctions & Set Price Listings

We are selling some of the recording gear, instruments, and effects from John Paul Jones' personal studio collection. Selected specialist items are being serviced by us and listed for sale at fixed prices while others are being offered in a series of timed auctions on the Soundgas site. Most of the auction items are offered on a sold as seen basis.

Why are some things fixed price and others auctioned?

The cost of servicing to our standard adds significantly to asking prices. It’s a balancing act between keeping things attainable for more people or striving for perfection that fewer can afford. With expensive specialist studio gear it makes sense to service and list at market prices, while the rest are auctioned on a sold as seen basis.

Is there more to come?

Yes. This is only part of the collection. We’ve already serviced and sold selected items at fixed prices and are continuing as workshop capacity allows. We will be holding further auctions - the next one will have more synths, keyboards and studio gear.

What’s the story of the Guild Amp and why don’t you fix that?

The Guild Thunderbass amplifier and speaker was used by JPJ during his time with Them Crooked Vultures featuring Foo Fighters‘ Dave Grohl and Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme. The amp was left at Grohl’s house from where it went out on a loan, and was subsequently returned with the speakers blown.

We’ve tested the amp and it works fine with a different speaker. The blown original is part of the story and it’s not for us to second guess what the future owner might want. Some would recone the original speakers, while others might fit new or vintage replacements to suit their taste/tone.

JPJ requires little introduction. From his extensive session playing and arranging in the heyday of sixties London to the formation of Led Zeppelin with Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Bonham in 1968, and subsequent production work, to playing in Them Crooked Vultures with Dave Grohl and Josh Homme.

By 1968 John was so busy with session work by day and also writing up to 40 arrangements a month for Mickie Most and Robert Stigwood, that the prospect of joining Jimmy Page’s new band seemed an option for a quieter life. The rest is history.

John is still very active musically, writing, recording and performing, but no longer requires so much studio equipment, most of which he has owned from new. He feels it should be in the hands of people who will put it to good use, so it is offered here without formal provenance, with the intention that it continues to be used as intended.

Please note that the items listed do not have any Led Zeppelin connection and are from John's private studio.
