A superb Sound City Echomaster 2. This is a re-badged solid state Binson Echorec 2 disc echo.

It's just had an extensive service/rebuild/calibration, including a total internal rewire and enhanced modifications.

It is in excellent condition - please see the detailed photos.

Modified by our tech with a varispeed control and switchable twin record heads for longer delays/more patterns (further details below).

This is a superb-sounding machine: the sweetest solid state Binson we've had - the board is populated with BC109 transistors as used in early seventies Fuzz Faces - it has a great character when pushed into saturation. The mods make it an extremely-versatile Binson. The previous owner used it very little, so the heads and disc are in great condition.

Twin record heads details:

Position A: Added rec head - it's a stock Echorec 2 but with longer delay times;
Position B: Original rec head - it's an Echorec 2;
A + B: With both heads switched in, you open up a whole new palette of multi-head repeats. The machine will self-oscillate more readily with this setting.

As a result of the modifications you have 36 delay patterns to chose from as opposed to a stock machine's 12.

A great player's machine with real creative possibilities.

There are currently no operational issues with this unit at all, but please be aware that these units require looking after and that regular maintenance is the key to keeping this in good working order.

Binson Echorecs are amazingly-engineered machines: where a tape echo's (ie Copicat) input sound is recorded to tape, on a Binson it is recorded onto a circular spinning disc which has replay heads positioned around it. It is possible to select single and repeating echoes or reverb-like swells - these units have a sound all of their own. They look fantastic at night (or on a darkened stage) with the magic eye valve glowing green and the backlit plexiglass fascia.

Binsons were one of the must-have pieces of equipment for bands in the early sixties, alongside the Fender Stratocaster and Vox AC30. Famously-used and abused by Barrett, Gilmour, Waters and Wright of Pink Floyd in the 60s and early 70s (Echorec 2s are very much in evidence on Live at Pompeii and can be seen on photos from many Floyd live shows), Binsons are increasingly sought-after today by studios, mix engineers and producers for their unique sound: Michael Brauer (Stones, McCartney, Coldplay) famously has an Echorec 2 in his arsenal of vintage delays.

Please be aware that it is a vintage unit and may not take kindly to being shipped. It will be well-packed, but if it's not behaving as it should on receipt, please get in touch. Please be aware that to own a machine such as this, you must be prepared to have it regularly checked over and maintained by a competent technician: it should withstand being shipped, but some calibration may be necessary.

Shipping discount available if paying by bank transfer.

We also have other Binson Echorec units available - see all our vintage tape and disc echo listings here - and if you don't see what you need then check out our stock list for incoming units or contact us direct and we will help.
