A rare opportunity to acquire a superb example of the legendary Oberheim FVS-1 Four Voice Synthesiser, offered on behalf of the current owner. This early-model unit is in excellent condition, with significant upgrades including MIDI input via a Yarns module, and is among the most inspiring and powerful polyphonic analogue synthesisers you could hope to experience.

At the heart of the FVS are four independent Synthesiser Expander Modules (SEMs), each effectively a fully-featured mono synth in its own right. Each SEM includes two VCOs with saw and pulse waveforms (including PWM and FM), a classic Oberheim multi-mode filter (lowpass, highpass, bandpass with sweepable modes), two envelopes, LFO, and full filter modulation. These filters are widely regarded for their exceptional sonic character – particularly their ability to retain low-end and output level when resonance is increased.

Programming the FVS is a unique and rewarding experience. Each SEM must be configured manually per patch, encouraging a different approach to sound design. Subtle variations between voices can yield rich, evolving textures – or configure all voices identically for a cohesive polyphonic patch. The synth also offers a powerful unison mode, where all four SEMs fire together – perfect for layered, earth-shaking analogue leads or bass.

This early example does not include the later preset programmer (which many users avoid due to its limitations), but instead features dual 8-step sequencers sharing a common clock. These sequencers open up a wealth of performance options: from polyphonic 4-note sequences to split-keyboard setups with independent SEM control.
The unit has been carefully serviced and calibrated for reliable operation and tuning stability. It performs consistently from power-on – no lengthy warm-up required – and comes with a concise programming guide developed for users renting the unit.

An internal Yarns MIDI interface provides both basic and advanced functionality:
