Old school circuitry, new school synthesis. This neatly sums up the Cric from which you can conjure up the beguiling rich timbres, tones and textures that are reminiscent of Kraftwerk, Jean Michel Jarre and many other greats of seventies synthesizer music. In my experience no other modern synths get as close, and yet Cric is also capable of being decidedly modern and very original (and completely 'bonkers' as Sarah Belle Reid finds below).
“Signal black” panel and enclosure.
Australian Jarrah hardwood side panels, using wood originally employed as the decking for the SS Great Britain’s refurbishment in the 1970s. These pieces were reclaimed by the Bristol Wood Recycling Project and handcrafted into these side panels by Steadfast who use woodcraft to reconnect timber and technology to its human and natural histories.
Why Brunel? Like Future Sound Systems, he's inextricably linked to Bristol. Designer of the SS Great Britain which was the first iron steamboat to cross the Atlantic. He only ever appeared in monochromatic photographs so the black/white colourway seemed a good fit!
See Sarah Belle Reid's excellent and detailed walkthrough below to get an idea of the immensity of sound design possibilties that dwell within Cric.
We met Fin and his wonderful new synth, Cric, at Superbooth and Tony was immediately blown away by it (he was soon grinning after only a few minutes tinkering).
The pin matrix is a thing of joy and of course brings to mind the EMS Synthi A and VCS3, but Cric is certainly not a clone - it's a very alive and vibrant new synth that offers a great deal of flexibility and sound design opportunities.
Our demo unit has just arrived and we love it - can't wait to dive deeper.
A user manual for Cric can be found here.
Future Sound Systems is an independent musical device manufacturer based in Bristol, England, specialising in modular synthesiser components and Eurorack modules. The Cric represents their flagship standalone synthesiser - not a clone or rehoused modular system, but a purpose-built instrument showcasing their unique approach to analogue synthesis.
