Has a 4-head solid state Echorec built into the top of the panel – essentially the same as an Echorec PE-603.
As a find this is up there with the Echorec P.E.603 – Stereo we had a few years ago (now sadly gone), however this Binson is so rare that it doesn’t even feature in AudioExMachina’s Echorec Bible. When we saw this huge beast we knew two things: that it would be a world of pain to bring back to life; and that we had to do it. A couple of years later and a chunk of time with two different engineers and we are finally (almost – see below) there.
Binson can only have made a few of these, given the lack of information about them online. This may be the only functional example left anywhere…
It’s heavy. It’s inconvenient, not least because the input and output sockets are in the centre of the underside. But, man is it a beautiful example of Binson’s industrial design aesthetic. Zoom into the photos to see some of the details.
Right now we’re holding on to it. We’ve invested a huge amount in bringing this back to a functional state. It’s not perfect and now we need to spend some time testing what it can do and deciding if we want to sink more money into it, or let it go as it is.
As we get some demos and more information we will add it to this page, or possibly devote a blog post to this fascinating piece of Italian music history.
If you have one of these or any information about them please get in touch!
Very good cosmetics overall. There is some wear to some of the printing and age-related scuffs and marks, but there’s no denying that this is an impressive looking slab of metal. All original slider and knob tops are present with Binson printing. Note that one slider has one of the legs broken – it still holds the top and is usable, but just requires a little extra care when doing so. See photos for more information on cosmetic condition.
Switchable voltage for use anywhere in the world - it will be set up ready for you to use before we ship.
For sales in UK/EU, this item is on the margin scheme for second hand goods. VAT-free sales are not possible for this item.
Binson Echorecs have been our obsession for many years. They are amazingly engineered machines: where a tape echo’s input sound is recorded to tape, with a Binson it is recorded onto a circular spinning drum which has replay heads positioned around it.
Every Echorec we sell is the result of many hours spent dismantling, rebuilding, calibrating, listening, tweaking. The distance between a “good” Binson and a truly “great” one may appear to be short in purely functional terms (how many times do we hear of a Binson that is “nearly there, just needs a little extra calibration to be perfect…”); but they are a world apart in terms of the time, patience and experience required to make them function and sounds as good as is possible.
To find out more about these machines – the history, how they work, and what we do to make them sing – head to our Binson pages now:
