The next stage in the Soundgas Type 636 evolution is coming soon: the Type 636-500. Based on our celebrated Type 636P and 636P2 preamplifiers, we are very excited to announce an API lunchbox format 636 preamp that will open up the Soundgas 636 sound to more people than ever.

All the wildness of our original 636 mic preamp circuit is there via the front panel direct in/out, but it can be tempered by using the transformer balanced output option on the rear in a similar vein to the twin channel 636P2. Like the P2, there's phantom power for use with condenser mics.

The 636-500 is more than just another product to us. It’s the result of our collective decades of experience with this unique circuit. Inspired by the original Grampian Type 636 Spring Reverb that was responsible for both Pete Townshend's guitar distortion with The Who and Lee 'Scratch' Perry's distinctive spring reverb sounds from his Black Ark Studio.

Dr Huw's design improved on the original to bring the extended performance, bass response and drive/distortion possibilities that made the Soundgas Type 636 such a hit. This spawned the 636P and 636P2 and all three units are modern day classics that can be heard on countless recordings. 

The Type 636-500 takes the sound of the classic units that we love and transforms them into something that fits into modern studios and recording chains effortlessly.

From its carefully hand-selected and matched vintage components to the exacting specification of the output transformers, everything about the 636-500 has been crafted to deliver exceptional sound quality.

We've worked with many of the finest vintage and modern units, and are renowned for our focus on quality drive and distortion. We can say with absolute conviction that the 636-500 does something very special indeed - which is essential for it to carry our name. It adds warmth, depth, drive and a particular kind of hairy magic that’s hard to put into words but is instantly recognisable.

We've packed the sonic character of our iconic Type 636 preamplifier into the compact 500-series format, making it easier and more cost effective to integrate into your studio setup.
