APH Model 3 Varispeed Cassette Recorder 5196B - SN 05130.

These American Printing House For The Blind recorders are something of a gem. Freshly serviced (see below) and ready for fun.

Designed for maximum capacity for audiobooks, this is a 4 track varispeed cassette recorder and player with switchable tape speeds and track select: on a regular cassette this flips the playback onto the other side of the tape - in reverse!

The massive pitch/speed range on offer makes this a great sound design tool (and of course you can record via the onboard condenser mic). Also has minijack line in/out.

Service work carried out:

Transport has been refurbished with new grease, oil and parts.
Belts x 2 have all been replaced. Pinch roller refreshed (still spongy).
Heads cleaned and demagged. Speed, azimuth calibrated.
Fresh solder on connections if necessary.
Machine entire external and internal clean Aux inputs have all been cleaned and tested.
Faders have been cleaned and re-lubed. Full machine test (playback & recording)

Servicing notes:

All belts replaced and pinch roller refreshed. There are 2
potentiometers for speed calibration but lacks anything else regarding calibration. No
servicing notes can be found online. Plays and records (MONO) with low wow/flutter
and good levels. Works well as an experimental mono unit.

You must retain the original packing materials and utilise them for any return – if this is not possible, you must return goods using packaging that matches the level of protection we employ: failure to do so may result in us refusing the return.

Goods must be returned in the same condition as supplied to remain eligible for a full refund. Important: in the case of new items, they must also be in the original packaging which, aside from any seals etc, must also be in mint condition (please take care with this); we reserve the right to charge a restocking fee of up to 25% if this is not adhered to.
