This is a far from exhaustive resource and we hope to update and expand it as time goes on. There are some notable (for us) omissions - no Boss KM-60 much loved by techno and electronic producers for example, nor do we cover the vintage Roland and Telefunken mixers we love, but it's a start!
The history of the mixing console is, in large part, the history of recorded music. The desk through which a recording passes shapes it in ways that go far beyond simple signal routing - and the national manufacturing traditions of Britain, Japan and America produced distinctly different approaches to what a mixing console should be and sound like. Understanding those differences is useful whether you're buying your first vintage desk or your fifteenth.
Britain: the broadcast tradition
British console design was shaped heavily by the BBC and the broadcast tradition that grew up around it. The emphasis was on precision, reliability and longevity - desks built to be serviced and maintained in-house, to last decades, and to perform consistently under the demanding conditions of live broadcast. The sonic character that resulted from this approach - transformer-coupled, valve and then transistor circuits designed by engineers who understood audio deeply - became the defining sound of British recorded music.
The landmark British desks are well known. EMI, Neve, Pye, Decca, Helios, Trident etc are the names behind the famous records that defined popular music from the 1960s into the 70s and beyond - joined by SSL in the mid 80s. But the British tradition runs deeper than these flagship
names. Manufacturers like Calrec, Audix, Glensound and Tweed supplied smaller-format desks built to similar specifications to regional studios, broadcast facilities and educational institutions. Following the transition to digital., many of those desks have found their way back into working studios via the secondhand market. While some of the aforementioned names are no longer
well-kept secrets, there are others that still are and can offer exceptional value (as long as you’re prepared to perhaps spend as much again on restoration).
Amek, Soundtracs, Soundcraft, Allen & Heath and other manufacturers brought British engineering sensibility to more accessible price points as home and small/project studios boomed.
The character of British console circuitry tends towards warmth, density and a particular quality in the low midrange that makes British desks sound natural and musical on almost everything. The top end is detailed but rarely harsh. The low end has weight without becoming muddy. These are generalisations, but they hold reasonably well across the tradition.
Japan: precision and value
Japanese audio manufacturing came of age in the 1970s and reached its peak in the 1980s. The approach was characteristically precise - close-tolerance components, rigorous quality control, and a focus on specifications that at the time exceeded what most Western manufacturers were achieving at comparable price points.
The result was a range of professional and semi-professional mixing consoles that offered genuine quality at prices that made them accessible to a much wider range of users than the British broadcast desks. Tascam, Yamaha, Sony and Roland all produced significant mixing
equipment during this period, and the better examples are now recognised as genuinely excellent equipment rather than merely affordable substitutes for more prestigious alternatives.
Japanese console sound tends towards neutrality and precision. The top end is extended and accurate, the stereo imaging is typically excellent, and the overall character is clean and detailed. This can occasionally read as clinical in comparison to the warmth of a British desk, but it's a quality that many engineers prefer - particularly for material where transparency is a priority.
America: the studio tool
American console design developed in parallel with the recording industry itself, shaped by the demands of commercial recording studios with intensive production schedules and limited tolerance for equipment that wasn't immediately practical. The emphasis was on functionality, reliability and a sonic character that worked across a wide range of music - from Nashville country to Motown soul to West Coast rock.
The landmark American desks - API, Neve American-specification, MCI, Neve 8078 - have defined specific sounds that producers continue to seek out. The API in particular has become synonymous with a particular aggressive, punchy character in the midrange that works especially well on drums and electric guitars. The console sounds of Motown, Muscle Shoals, Criteria Studios - these are American console sounds, and they're distinctive.
American console design also gave rise to some of the most practically useful mixing furniture ever made - desks designed around the ergonomics of long sessions, with meter bridges, patchbay integration and monitor sections (not to mention integral ashtrays!) laid out with working engineers in mind.
Choosing between them
There's no objectively correct answer to which tradition produces the best consoles. The right desk is the one that suits your music, your workflow and your budget. A few generalisations from the interweb that are probably as wrong as they are right: if warmth and density matter more than transparency, look British or American; if precision and value are priorities, look Japanese; if the drum sound is the most important thing, look American. And then go and listen to as many of them as you can, because no amount of description substitutes for actually putting audio through a desk and hearing what it does.

What is the difference between British and Japanese mixing consoles? +
British desks tend towards warmth, density and transformer character. Japanese desks tend towards precision and neutrality (but there are plenty from both countries that defy this generalisation). Both traditions produced excellent equipment and the choice depends largely on the sonic character you're looking for.
Which vintage mixing console is best for recording? +
It depends on the music, workflow and budget - there are as many answers as there are desks and people wanting to make music!
Are American mixing consoles better than British ones? +
Neither tradition is objectively superior. American desks - particularly API - are known for a punchy, aggressive midrange that works well on drums and guitars. British desks are known for warmth and musicality. The right choice depends on what you're recording and what sound you're looking for.
What era of mixing console sounds best? +
The 1970s and early 1980s produced some of the most characterful analogue consoles ever made, and this is the era that generates the most interest from producers and engineers looking for vintage character. Later 1980s desks can be more neutral and transparent. Is it worth buying a vintage mixing console over a modern one? +
For many producers and engineers, yes - the analogue character and sonic quality of a well-maintained vintage desk is genuinely difficult to replicate with modern equipment. The practical considerations of space, maintenance and reliability need to be weighed against that, but for working studios the trade-off is frequently worth it.
