Ace Tone FR-6 analogue drum machine for sale. An uncommon 1960’s beatbox – the Roland CR-68 and 78 are descendants, but the sound of these is quite different: primitive and very good!
IMPORTANT: This has not been serviced and it definitely needs it. Right now it is all working and sounds great. But it is in need of a full recap. This is exactly the sort of thing you’d see listed elsewhere as “all working great! (sold as is)” but obviously that’s not how we do things here. So, this could go straight to work making noises and you could sample the hell out of it, but it needs a chunk of tech time if it is going to keep working and be as good as it can be. (A tip if you are looking at things like this online – ask to see a shot of the bottom as that is often where the screws are, and the screws can offer a clue as to how much moisture has been around the item. We’ve deliberately not cleaned the ones on the bottom of this so you can see the green discolouration: a sure sign that is has been somewhere damp and that internal components are likely to need changing.)
No warranty on this auction item.
MORE INFO ABOUT THESE:
Ace Tone Rhythm Aces were the direct ancestors of the mighty Roland TR and CR series of drum machines. You might be forgiven for thinking that the various “FR” range of Ace Tone boxes are basically the same machine in a different case, but this is not the case – the circuits have plenty of similarities, but differences in design and components can mean they don’t all sound alike (the use of different components may have been driven by nothing more than what was available at the time of course!). These sound different to other Ace Tones we’ve had; very clear and punchy with some real bite to the claves and tom sounds.
The range of rhythms isn’t exactly huge but you can generate some interesting combinations and jam along with the usual multiple button presses and the variation selector knob.

100v Japanese model - it will run on North American mains 115/120v without a transformer (we run all our tests using 120v power); however, a step-down transformer is recommended for extended use. A step-down transformer is required in the UK/EU. We do not recommend using cheap generic Chinese mains transformers and can supply a high quality UK-made unit if required.
This auction item will have 20% VAT added to the final price for UK buyers. Buyers elsewhere may incur VAT or other local taxes on import.
