BINSON ECHOREC PE603-T6

Unique Binson PE 603T-6 disc echo in excellent cosmetic condition  and superb working order.

The PE 603 series were the most advanced machines Binson ever produced – this model is effectively a six head Echorec 2 in a very robust and heavy metal case.

The stock six head 603 was already a formidable machine, but this one has been modified to Soundgas specification to include:

Variable Speed Control;

Extra switch-able record head;

Guitar level input.

We had a brand new complete and unused platter, disc and head set in stock which have been fitted to this machine so it’s as close to new condition operationally as possible and should give many years of service.

This unique modified machine is an excellent example for the sonic adventurer, maybe less-so for a Binson purist.

The extra record head allows longer delay times and, in conjunction with the original rec head, many new multi-head patterns.

The rear three-position head selector switch controls which record head(s) are in use:

1. With the original rec head switched in it’s a stock 603;

2. With both heads switched in, you open up a whole new palette of multi-head repeats.

3. With just the second rec head, it’s a 603 but with longer delay times.

As a result of the modifications you have 108 delay patterns to chose from as opposed to a stock machine’s 36.

The vari-speed control allows precise tempo-matching, though you will notice increased levels of noise at higher speeds, and less clarity at lower speeds (the treble control can be adjusted to compensate).

The standard bulbs were blown and have been replaced with green LEDs for a very nice if slightly menacing appearance in the darkened studio or stage.

The classic bloom-like Swell setting, combined with the additional head patterns makes this a fantastic and unique mix effect.

It sounds wonderful and inspires creativity when you play through it – whoever buys this will be getting a great machine in top operational condition which should give many years good service.

The motor starts well and spins happily and without issue. It will go into self-oscillation very swiftly on certain settings if required (this can be adjusted via the internal trimpot for more subtle or extreme effects, but it’s been set-up for optimum performance) and it’s capable of all sorts of cosmic noises – Binsons do tend to encourage experimental noise-mongering. The repeats are not hifi – this is after all 50 year-old technology – if you want perfect repeats, buy a digital delay.

The voltage selector had been removed when we bought it, so it’s a 240v model and would require a step-up transformer for use in the USA/Canada.

These machines need regular use and maintenance to remain in good working order.

There are currently no operational issues with this unit at all, but please be aware that these units require looking after and that regular maintenance is the key to keeping this in good working order. They are very delicate: minute adjustments are made to the heads’ positions for optimum performance, so it is possible that this machine will need to be calibrated again after shipping (most withstand shipping with careful packing, but the buyer should be prepared to have this done if required).
