Vintage valve (tube) Binson Echorec 2 model T7E disc echo dating from around 1965-6 in truly exceptional condition and perfect working order.
It has had very little use from new and has recently been serviced, re-valved and rewired internally: this represents a unique opportunity to buy a valve Echorec 2 in as new condition.
It sounds fantastic and inspires creativity when you play through it – whoever buys this will be getting a great machine in top operational condition which should give many years good service. Being a good quality vintage valve unit, it also sounds wonderful as a pre-amp. The motor starts well and the disc spins smoothly and quietly (some machines can require a nudge to get started if they’ve not been used for many months). It will go into gentle self-oscillation if required (this can be adjusted via the internal trim-pot) and is capable of all sorts of cosmic noises – Binsons do tend to encourage experimental noise-mongering. The repeats are not hifi – this is after all 50 year-old technology – if you want perfect repeats, buy a digital delay.
These machines need regular use and maintenance to remain in good working order. There are currently no operational issues with this unit at all, but please be aware that these units require looking after and that regular maintenance is the key to keeping this in good working order. (Please note: it is always possible with vintage equipment that some crackly pots/sliders may develop over time when equipment has not been used – even during shipping – this can usually be easily rectified either by use or judicious application of suitable switch-cleaning spray).
It has the original twin core mains cable with earth lead (included) and has a voltage selector so can be used anywhere in the world without modification (aside from changing the plug!). Whilst we usually recommend having such machines upgraded to IEC sockets for safety, this one is in such good original condition, we felt it should be left to the buyer to decide.
Binson Echorecs are amazingly-engineered machines: where a tape echo’s (ie Copicat) input sound is recorded to tape, on a Binson it is recorded onto a circular spinning disc which has replay heads positioned around it. It is possible to select single and repeating echoes or reverb-like swells – these units have a sound all of their own. They look fantastic at night (or on a darkened stage) with the magic eye valve glowing green and the back-lit plexiglass fascia.
The travel case has some exterior scuffs and damage, but the Echorec itself is simply stunning. The T7E Echorec 2 is one of the finest machines Binson produced and it is increasingly-rare to find such a good one. I’ve bought many Binsons over the years, and this is without a doubt the best I’ve found.
Binson Echorecs have been our obsession for many years. They are amazingly engineered machines: where a tape echo’s input sound is recorded to tape, on a Binson it is recorded onto a circular spinning disc which has replay heads positioned around it.
Every Echorec we sell is the product of an accumulation of hundreds of hours spent dismantling, rebuilding, tweaking and listening to them. The distance between a “good” Binson and a truly “great” one may only be short in terms of functioning (how many people tell us they’ve got a Binson from somewhere that is “90% there…”); but in our experience they can be a world apart in terms of the time, patience and experience required to get to that ultimate goal.
